How To Read Your Gas And Electric Meters
It is only right to know and see the total bill for everything we are paying for. That said, learning how to read your gas and electric meters can provide you with a peace of mind that your bills justly reflect your total consumption. However, with so many different kinds of meter, the task can be pretty confusing. Read on for a quick guide on how to easily read each type correctly.

Gas meters

Digital metric meter
To read your meter, write down the five numbers shown from left to right and ignore the number(s) after the decimal point which may be shown in red.

Imperial meter
To read your meter, write down the four numbers shown from left to right and ignore the number(s) shown in red.

Dial meter
To read your meter, get the number closest to each pointer of the dial by ignoring any other numbers and focusing only at the four dials from left to right along the bottom row. If the pointer stopped between two numbers, write down the lower number whilst if it is between nine and zero, write down nine. Keep in mind to check which way each dial turns as they tend to turn in the opposite direction to the one before each.

Electricity meters

Single rate meter
To read your meter, write down the five numbers shown from left to right and ignore the last number(s) which may be shown in red.

Two rate meter
If you have Economy 7, Economy 10 or Evening and Weekend tariff, then you may have a two-rate meter. To read both top and bottom rows, write down the numbers shown from left to right and ignore the last number(s) which may be shown in red.

Two rate, single display meter
There are two rate meters that only have one digital display that either flash up the different rate readings in a cycle or requires for you to press a button to initiate the display cycle through the readings for each rate.

Dial meter
To read your meter, focus on the first five dials from left to right and ignore the dial marked one or ten. After that, write down the number that the pointer has just passed by using the lower of the two numbers on either side of the pointer. Keep in mind that the sequence of numbers on each dial can alternate from clockwise to counter-clockwise.
